Hampton High School boys basketball team earns VHSL Class 4 state championship

The Hampton High School (HHS) Crabber boys basketball team earned the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 4 state championship. The team defeated the Tuscarora Huskies 66-63 on Friday, March 8, 2024, at the VCU Siegel Center. Three crabbers scored in double figures, led by Abraham Taft with 15 points, Gavin Kay with 14, and Kharon Clarke had 10.

The Crabber record for the year under the direction of head coach Eric Brown is 25-2. The team has not held a record of only two losses in over 30 years, and the 16-game winning streak is the longest in the modern era.

Brown said, “This was the true definition of a team; everyone had a job and did that job when they were called upon. It showed in the championship game as we had 23 points off the bench. It took commitment from everyone starting last May and ended on March 8 with finishing on top.”

“The boys basketball team exhibited model behavior for student athletes throughout the season,” said HHS athletic director Justin Vias. “They picked each other up when needed but also held each other accountable when necessary. The commitment of the coaching staff, the players and the managers exuded excellence and came to fruition in the form of a state championship. #crabberpride”

Congratulations team on a job well done!
