Alternative Education generally refers to programs offered for students who are finding little or no success in the traditional school environment. HCS attempts to offer these students success by creating programs structured differently and often housed outside of their regular school buildings. Children come to alternative education for a variety of reasons— academic skill deficits, low motivation, poor attendance, behavioral problems or a simple reluctance to participate in the educational process. Some are very bright; others need a great deal of help. It is incorrect to assume that all students in alternative education have either learning or behavioral problems; that is not necessarily the case. The only common thread is that the traditional school environment or program is not working for them.
Enrollment in almost every alternative program is a choice made by students, parents and schools to best meet educational needs. There are no involuntary alternative placements with the exception of students on long-term suspension.
Bridgeport Academy exists to provide students with rigorous academic opportunities and sound behavior modification strategies that will strengthen them to compete in the 21st century. For more information please visit Bridgeport Academy. |
The Hampton Performance Learning Center (PLC) is a unique non-traditional learning environment for high school students that have not been successful in traditional schools for various reasons other than ability. The PLC operates a business-like environment that prepares students for high school graduation and beyond. The program offers students the opportunity to accelerate their learning, using a computer-based curriculum and project-based instruction. The intimate setting allows for personal and small group instruction. In addition students will benefit from mentorships, job-shadowing and preparation for post-secondary education.
