English as a Second Language

The English as a Second Language Department strives to provide instructional support to students and families that speak a language other than English as their first language.  Hampton City Schools has three ESL centers, one for elementary, one for middle and one for high school students.  If a student is found eligible for ESL support, he/she will attend one of the ESL centers.  Transportation is provided by HCS at no cost to the family.

All instruction is provided to ESL students in English.  It is the goal of this program to prepare students for academic success in the regular classroom upon completion of the program.

Langley Elementary School provides academic support to ESL students through core content instruction.  ESL students receive instruction from a certified ESL teacher during one or more of the core academic content areas, language arts, science, social studies or math.  ESL students participate in the same grade level activities and curriculum as their non-ESL peers.  At Langley Elementary, there is one ESL teacher per grade level, K-5.  ESL students in grades 3-5 must participate in the Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments each year.

Lindsay Middle School has two certified ESL teachers that provide instructional support and lessons during the ESL student’s language arts block.  The ESL teacher teaches the Hampton City Schools approved curriculum on the student’s academic level incorporating strategies and accommodations to ensure success.  ESL students are expected to participate in all Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments.

Hampton High School has two certified ESL teachers to provide instruction in English 9-12 and English as a Foreign Language classes.  High school ESL students receive English credits and foreign language credits upon successful completion of these classes.  ESL students attend up to three ESL classes, per semester, depending on their language proficiency level.  ESL students have to take and pass all End-of-Course (EOC) exams and SOL tests in order to graduate.

Please contact the ESL department to schedule an appointment for an English proficiency screening before going to your zoned school for registration.

The language proficiency screening consists of a listening, speaking, reading, and writing component.  Potential ESL students in grades K-12 must take this assessment before they can register in a Hampton City School.  At the completion of the screening, the student will be directed to the appropriate school for ESL or the zoned school if no ESL services are needed.  A parent or guardian must accompany the student to the ESL office for the screening to be administered.

It is the parents’ right to refuse ESL services and enroll the student in the zoned school.  Once a student has been identified as Limited English Proficient, he/she will be re-evaluated yearly.  Parents will be notified of the testing dates and results by mail.

Hampton City Schools requires all potential students to provide the following documents for school registration.  These documents are also necessary when a student is being evaluated for ESL services.

  • Student’s Birth Certificate and/or passport
  • A photo ID or passport of the student’s parent or guardian
  • Court Issued Custody Papers (for students living with a guardian)
  • Proof of Residency
    • This must be a power bill, gas bill, water bill, lease, or mortgage papers with the Hampton address and the parent/guardian’s name
    • If residing with another family, an Affidavit must be completed and notarized before enrollment can take place (you can get an Affidavit from the Student Services’ Office).

For further information please call the ESL Office at 727-2483.
