The menus for Food and Nutrition Services are planned by a Registered Dietician in accordance with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the requirements of the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. Meals are designed in a kid-friendly format that encourages healthy choices and a variety of foods, including whole grains, fresh fruits, vegetables, vegetarian offerings, and freshly made salads, served daily.

Facts: Hampton City Schools Food and Nutrition Services participates in the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, and the Afterschool Snack Program. Breakfast is served in all Hampton City Schools. John B. Cary Elementary School and Jane H. Bryan Elementary School participate in the Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Program.

Twenty schools are designated as Team Nutrition Schools and the department is on track to have all schools signed up by 2011. As a result of student feedback, all four high schools operate Subway franchises as part of the department’s commitment to continuous improvement and customer service.

Food and Nutrition services partners with chefs from the Virginia Culinary Institute as part of the Chefs on the Move Program at John B. Cary Elementary School and Jane H. Bryan Elementary School. Chefs provide culinary training for staff, parents, and students.

Food and Nutrition Services:

  • Is self-supporting. Operating funds come from the sale of school meals, federal reimbursements, and state matching funds for those meals
  • Has a 9.3 million dollar operating budget
  • Has 300+ employees
  • Served 2.5 million school lunches, 900,000 school breakfasts, and 115,000 afterschool snacks last year
  • Has 33 production kitchens and four satellite sites
  • Operates a computerized point of sale system which accurately tracks meal sales, student eligibility, and prepayment options. A back of the house system that fosters fiscal integrity and responsibility.

The role of the Food Service Assistant is a vital one. Preparing and serving food allows the customer enjoy a tasty, high quality, nutritious meals at an affordable cost. By serving school meals in a positive, cheerful manner our food service assistants are an integral part of the educational environment of Hampton City Schools. They provide essential nutrition education to allow our student to make healthy choices every day.

Food & Nutrition Substitutes
Currently, positions are available for substitute employees. Substitutes perform varied duties involved in the preparation and serving of food and in the cleaning of the kitchen equipment and facilities. Substitutes are part of the team and every duty performed is essential in reaching our goal of providing tasty high-quality, nutritious school meals. Substitutes are included in employee orientation, training and in-services offered during the year. Substitute positions pay is minimum wage.
