The Foundation’s Mini-Grant Program for Teachers provides financial support up to $300 to provide materials, supplies, and/or resources to enhance and improve the classroom learning experience in alignment with the Virginia Standards of Learning. More Grant Opportunities: The Grants Department provides access to current funding opportunities through The Foundation Center’s Philanthropy News Digest and the Public Education Network. These listings are updated frequently, so bookmark these pages and visit often. Grant-seekers may also want to sign up for one of many free grant alert services available, such as those available through the Philanthropy News Digest.
Grant-Writing Resources
First-time grant-seekers seeking assistance with proposal writing may wish to visit The Foundation Center website; its short course on writing proposals will provide a strong introduction to grant writing. Another helpful website is SchoolGrants; in addition to providing guidelines for grant-writing, its Grant Writing Tips page provides a link to sample proposals that provide useful models for first-time grant-writers. There are many published guides to grant-writing available, including some excellent publications in the HCS Professional Library and Hampton Public Library.
HCS Grants Policies & Procedures
To ensure coordination and to avoid confusion in developing grant proposals and making application for specially funded programs, the School Board has approved a policy and regulations for non-locally funded programs. All discretionary grant proposals, with the exception of individual classroom grants, must first be reviewed and authorized through the school division’s Grants Department. This same protocol applies to those cases where the Division’s support is sought by external organizations through requests for letters of support, memoranda of understanding, or letters of intent. The policy and regulations (DO/DO-R) are published in the division’s on-line policy manual.
