Science

The goal of the science department is to help our students become scientifically literate citizens. According to the National Science Education Standards, "students cannot achieve high levels of performance without access to skilled professional teachers, adequate classroom time, a rich array of learning materials, accommodating work spaces, and the resources of the sciencecommunities surrounding their schools." The science department is helping to provide this support.

Science Matters Hampton is a part of the national network of science teachers called Science Matters. This organization has been initiated by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) to bring content, news, and information that supports quality science education to parents and teachers nationwide. “Science Matters” builds on the success of the “Building a Presence for Science” program, first launched in 1997 as an e-networking initiative to assist teachers of science with professional development opportunities. Building a Presence for Science—now “Science Matters”—reaches readers in 34 states and the District of Columbia. For more information, go to: sciencematters.nsta.org

Partnerships

Peninsula Gem & Mineral Society

The Society is a nonprofit organization whose membership is open to all lovers of lapidary arts, mineralogy, paleontology and all associated fields of Earth Science. They meet monthly at Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton. Their members have graciously offered their collections as well as their expertise as an additional resource to Hampton City Schools.
NASA SCIence Files

Hampton City Schools' science department and NASA Langley have joined forces to produce the NASA SCIence Files. It is a series of problem based instructional videos for grades 3-5 that introduces students to science as inquiry and the scientific method. Each program supports the national science standards and includes a 60-minute video divided into four, 15-minute "teachable" episodes, a companion teacher guide, a web-based component, classroom activities, virtual field trips and more. The problems and story lines have been created by teachers in Hampton with the help of scientists from NASA Langley Research Center. Many of the episodes have been filmed in part at Hampton elementary schools and our students have participated in the videos. This series is broadcast to thousands of schools across the country. For more information, go to http://scifiles.larc.nasa.gov
The NASA SCIence Files series has been nominated for and won three Emmy awards.
Virginia Air and Space Center
