Home Instruction Requirements

The Virginia Code provides for exemptions from compulsory attendance requirements for those children who are to be instructed at home. Please download the following home schooling documents.

PLEASE READ THE ABOVE DOCUMENTS COMPLETELY prior to turning in an Intent to Home School form. You must provide an Intent to Home School packet every year you plan to home school.

Notice to Parents

Annual Notice of Intent to Home Instruct 

A parent who elects home instruction must notify the school division no later than August 15 of the intent to do so for the coming school year, provide a description of the curriculum to be followed for the coming year and provide evidence of having met one of the criteria described in § 22.1-254.1.A for providing home instruction. Test results for the previous year are due by August 1. 

Parents who move into the school division or begin home instruction after the school year has begun must notify  the division of their intent to provide home instruction as soon as practicable and comply with the provisions of the statute within 30 days of such notice. (§ 22.1-254.1.B) This means that after providing the school division with a notice of intent, the latter parents can begin home schooling and they will have 30 days to submit the other required information to the school division. 

Enrollment of Home Instructed Students in Hampton City Schools

Students provided home instruction, may be allowed to enroll in the Hampton City Schools for participation in curricular activities on a part-time or single course basis in any mathematics, science, English, history, social science, vocational education, fine arts, foreign language, health education or physical education course. The ADM calculation shall be 0.25 per course up to a maximum of 0.50, or two (2) courses per student. Enrollment will be on a space available basis.
