Grants for Teachers Program Established

When the Hampton Education Foundation was organized in 2001, its primary goal was to assist the Hampton school division in equipping students with the skills and knowledge to compete successfully in their chosen educational, career, and life endeavors. The Foundation’s Board is comprised of highly respected business and community leaders who recognize the connection between quality education and a healthy community. To that end, the Board implemented an exciting Grants for Teachers Program which includes both Innovative Instructional Grants and Mini-Grants.
Innovative Instructional Grants Mini-Grants

The Hampton Education Foundation Innovative Instructional Grant program awards individual grants up to $1,000 to assist teachers of all subjects in Hampton City Schools to develop, plan, implement and evaluate innovative instructional strategies and classroom programs aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning. All HCS teachers are eligible to apply.

The purpose of the Mini-Grant Program for Teachers is to provide financial support up to $300 to provide materials, supplies, and/or resources to enhance and improve the classroom learning experience in alignment with the Virginia Standards of Learning.

The Hampton Education Foundation has a strong commitment to education in Hampton and values the contributions of teachers. It is a non-profit, tax-exempt public corporation operating independently under a Board of Directors serving without compensation. At its August 2005 meeting, the Board established a fundraising goal of $25,000 to seed the Grants for Teachers Program. By the time the grant applications had been posted on the school division’s web site on October 7, 2005 the $25,000 goal had been met through the generous contributions of Board members, other individuals and a local foundation. In three short years, the Hampton Education Foundation has provided nearly $50,000 dollars in teacher grants.

The Board continues to pursue funding sources to support the grants program as well as the Foundation’s general fund. Gifts to the Foundation are tax-deductible and may be sent to Hampton Education Foundation, 1 Franklin Street, Hampton, Virginia 23669.
