Magnet Schools
Jones Magnet Middle School
Jones Magnet Middle School is a model, comprehensive school of choice. Its small school setting of only 1000 students, allows more individual instruction. The program provides innovative scheduling to allow twice the traditional class time for math and language arts/reading. Its unique scheduling design allows students to concentrate on fewer subjects each semester. Classes provide 90 minutes of uninterrupted instruction. Admission is through an application process that is based on a lottery system and transportation is provided.
Cooper Magnet Elementary School for Technology-Star Achievers Academy
Cooper is the only elementary magnet school in the City of Hampton and is an exemplary learning environment that sets high expectations for its teachers, students and parents. Children are challenged to stretch to become the best they can be. The school has a welcoming, calm, caring and well disciplined atmosphere where children's efforts are valued and recognized. The team of talented teachers and staff believe that all children, given the right support, can learn. Our mission is to foster the talents and abilities of the children ''in the middle" the often overlooked average achieving student.
Fundamental Schools
The fundamental program attempts to build within each child a sense of responsibility, confidence, pride in accomplishment, and a positive self-image through proven academic achievement in a quiet, orderly setting. The program is based on the belief that learning takes place best in a carefully structured, well-disciplined educational environment. The major emphasis is on basic academic skills and subject matter, and fostering good study habits. There are four fundamental schools, three elementary schools—Armstrong, Barron, and Tucker-Capps, and one middle school—Thomas Eaton. Each fundamental elementary school has an established zone for kindergarten students. Siblings of kindergarten students are given first priority for placement. All others must make application at the fundamental school of their choice (including the middle school) and are accepted on a space available basis. Parents must provide transportation.
